IBM
This
project will demonstrate how a data-centric approach to
risk assessment can be done with a combination of existing
tools and extensions. Traditional views of risk employ a
system-centered approach where privacy policies are centered
on data access. We take a data-centric view of risk where
policies and procedures are built around (1) a map of where
data resides, (2) which applications and processes use it,
and (3) where it goes.
Capital
Broadcasting Company
This
project involves the development of a community website
portal that will provide a place for users to access tools
with which they can search for community news and information,
publish community news and information, interact with other
members of their own neighborhood, interact with communities
of shared interest, and rate each other's content. The portal
will provide a content publication and management system
that will enable users to upload and publish photos, weblogs,
news items, calendar items, and community events. In addition,
users will be able to pull in RSS feeds of content available
elsewhere on the web and create RSS feeds of their own published
content. Users will also be able to interact with other
users by geographic neighborhood and special interests.
GlaxoSmithKline
This
project will adapt an already existing system that generates
a variety of product/customer reports. This reporting system
is currently not available for use by everyone at the company,
and reports pertaining to a particular product/customer
can only be obtained by putting in a request to a designated
manager. This is inefficient because there are numerous
individuals who need to access different pieces of the system,
but they are not authorized and must therefore, go through
the designated manager to access their reports. We are developing
a layer of security around the existing system by creating
a special security client. This will allow authorized individuals
to access their own product and customer reports.
Symantec
This
project involves three components related to a security
framework used as an approach to risk management. (1) Review
and feedback on the framework and best practice content
that has been developed to-date by Symantec, (2) development
of a set of metrics and weighting that will apply to the
framework security elements, and (3) the development of
a tool that can be used to facilitate the delivery of a
highlevel risk assessment based on the framework.
MCNC
MCNC
is currently engaged with both internal and external customers
on a variety of projects. Currently, there is no centralized
location for communication between those groups. As such,
management of MCNC has determined that a centralized content
management system should be developed that would handle
these requirements. We will evaluate several Content Management
Software (CMS) solutions, select a suitable CMS, install
and configure the CMS, extend the CMS to meet the unique
needs of the organization.

Surry
County Arts Council
The Surry County Arts Council wants to have a website
that enables group tour guides and/or individuals to plan
a trip to the area and immediately know the per person price.
Guides would select from a list of options in various categories
and have a per person price at the end of their selections.
They would then be able to confirm and purchase (security/privacy
sensitive) the "package option" on-line.

The
Arts Center of Carrboro
This project involves the creation
of an interactive website that will assist the Arts Center
with handling patron requests for tickets and class registrations
faster and more efficiently through an online system. The
system will allow for a better means for people to donate
to the center as well. Additional security will also be
added to enable other transactions.

IBM
The P3P standard does not extend
well to the enterprise level and is tailored more for an
individual than for a business. The emerging EPAL language
will allow policies to be written that describe in detail
an enterprise's internal data handling practices.
The
EPAL language is defined by an XML Schema. There is currently
no means to graphically edit policies using this language.
The project requires the team to develop a stand alone Swing-based
EPAL editor that allows importing and exporting of EPAL
policies, GUI editing of EPAL policies, and importing of
P3P policies to export as EPAL policies.
ABB
ABB wants to capitalize in its company knowledge and experience
and sell it to its customers. Many units at ABB possess
valuable domain knowledge that exists
in the heads of experienced employees. Currently, there
is a service department where the Utility company calls
and is transferred to the "valuable" employee
who provides expert advice. This service can be packaged
and made available via a Web portal. So, when a Utility
maintenance person is walking through a facility with a
hand-held device, can ask for advice to the ABB Web-Doctor.
And ABB can sell this advice as a service.
NavoWave
In 2002, Microsoft introduced the Tablet Computer and Tablet
extension to Windows XP in partnership with major computer
manufacturers like HP, Fujitsu, Toshiba, ViewSonic, and
others. This project involves building models for learning
and performance support on the tablet computer. As part
of this project, the team should perform market analysis
for Tablet based learning and performance support, and build
a Tablet interface for viewing and interacting with learning
and performance support content.
I-Cubed
It is anticipated that the application security layer will
develop "holes" on an ongoing basis similar to
the new virus threats that are rising. Thus the application
layer must be continually updated, which may create a subscription
opportunity. The application must require download of these
updates before making the engineering document available
to the users. This requires the application layer to ask
the server if updates are required and download them automatically
without user intervention. The development aspects of this
project will create a prototype Java update utility. The
business aspects will deal with creating a business model
which validates the market for such a product/service/subscription.
The ideal team will have a Network Administrator to set
up an HTTPS server and create the necessary code and scripts
to bootstrap the Design Application Extension.
Market
Acquity
This project involves development of online resources for
generating and distributing information regarding CFG (Customer
Focus Groups) events. Additionally, the project requires
building a database of people interested in sponsoring and/or
participating in CFG for local tech organizations.

Xforms:
The Xforms Project is a continuation of the Xforms project
developed during Spring 2002, which is an application that
provides desktop browser and WAP 2.0 access to a customer's
consolidated bank accounts The Xforms project for the current
semester would be an extension to the XBank application
to use web services to query each bank for the user's account
information and to process transactions for those accounts.
Web
Portal:
As part of its Industrial IT initiative, ABB is developing
Industrial IT enabled software components. These software
components are intended to be made available through a Web
Portal to potential ABB customers so that they can purchase
them, download them, and use them to put together some kind
of application. The project requires students to develop
a Web Portal prototype, which would run in a PC environment.
Arts
Council:
The Surry County Arts Council currently has a website that
is updated by a volunteer who lives and works in Raleigh.
The URL is www.surryarts.org. The project requires students
to further extend the website to an online shopping site.
The resulting website should have professional appeal and
the customer is open to ideas of the Practicum students.
Presenter's
Consortium:
The North Carolina Presenter's Consortium has a part-time
Webmaster that maintains the site at http://www.ncpresenters.org/.
This project involves developing a system using push technology
for emailing information to past ticket purchasers, a calendar
system, and an on-line "hot tix" system. The "hot
tix" system they envision will be similar to the TKTS
box office in New York City.
Privacy
Web Services:
This project requires students to assess the current state
of E-Commerce Web sites for P3P compliance-(e.g. how many
P3P compliant sites actually make extensive use of all the
available P3P tags; are there any existing web service or
application generators that ensure compliance with privacy
and security policies). Design and prototype a system that
will enable compliance checking between websites and stated
privacy policies.

Art
Museum:
The Hickory Museum of Art would like to enhance their online
presence by providing additional capabilities to their static
website. At the present time, people must communicate with
the museum via phone, postal mail, or actually visiting
the museum. The museum folks would like to make things easier
for their patrons by (1) creating an online store (2) providing
online registration for classes and (3) offering a method
of membership renewal online.
Conference
Integration:
This project involves enhancing e-learning and making it
more engaging by integrating existing software products
of Centra and LIPSinc. Centra has proprietary software that
enables e-learning both in synchronous and asynchronous
modes. LIPsinc's Livetalk and TalkBack software brings characters
to life by using an engine that incorporates audio input
into a character's facial movement in a way that makes the
character appear more realistic. This
project will combine the existing technologies from Centra
and LipSinc in a way that has never been done.
Conference
Registration:
The upcoming SREIS conference will soon be accepting online
registration. The problem is that the website does not have
this capability yet. The project team will investigate some
of the innovative and effective methods of providing online
conference registration and implement this for the organization.
Wireless:
The problem to be addressed is the creation of an XForms
application that will acquire data from existing web services
in XML format. A wireless-based client will initiate the
request for data to a server side XForms application. That
application will acquire the desired web services data,
manipulate and render as required by an XForms processor
and deliver the rendered data back to the client.

Non-Standard
Orders Online Transactions:
Students developed electronic commerce software to enable
e-commerce of Kodak Earth Imaging Products non-standard
orders. Specifically, they created an online entry form
and price calculator to support Sales Force and Value Added
Resellers and potentially end users in calculation of non-standard
quotes and enabled the on-line transaction of purchases.
Online Bidding:
Kodak Earth Imaging Products sells available and planned
imagery. They enable users to specify a global area of which
they would like digital imagery. They have an array of local
fliers willing to provide quotes based on the users needs.
What they needed was an efficient way to managem the transaction.
Students developed an online bidding exchange transaction
system. The system captures a request for quote of imagery
acquisition and enables an online bidding environment to
support a database of local aerial fliers.
Napster
for Consultants:
IBM's Intellectual Capital Management (ICM) system has
proven to be a useful tool, however, a number of issues
in use have been identified. First, consultants are not
adequately incented to share files and/or post them to IC.
Second, those files that are posted to IC are usually final
reports and have very little applicability to interim work
deliverables of interest to consultants. Third, lack of
standardization of work flow and nomenclature around work
flow has rendered the search mechanisms within ICM ineffective.
Fourth, the lag-time between the completion of a consulting
engagement and it's posting to ICM is simply too long and
finally the administrative overhead associated with reviewing,
classifying and managing the information within ICM is becoming
increasingly taxing from a resource perspective. The project
scope included an examination of the key issues associated
with ICM, a validation of the business importance of these
issues, an identification of the technical requirements
that stem from these validated business issues and the development
of a prototype P2P system that integrated IBM's standardized
work-flow process.
Next
Generation Email:
Given the increasing amount of time that people spend managing
and processing their e-mails, instant messages, and other
correspondences, a need for the reinvention of the corporate
communications interface is needed to ensure that productivity
is not negatively impacted by increasing electronic communications.
The project scope included an examination of the key issues
associated with each communication technology (e-mail, instant
messaging and internet meeting rooms), a validation of the
business importance of these issues, an identification of
the optimal usage scenarios for each medium and a recommendation
for integration of each medium to facilitate synergy, codification
of the technical requirements that stem from the analysis
and the development of a prototype internal communication
dashboard that integrates these technologies. Sponsored
by IBM.

Order
Tracking System:
Newton Instruments asked the student team to specify, design
and prototype an electronic order tracking system. The tracking
information request should travel from Newton's website
to the Carrier's website, and report back to the user via
Newton's website.
User
Interface Design:
Newton Instruments asked the student team to design and
prototype multiple design alternatives for the Newton website
prototype. Participatory requirements analysis, usability
and user interface design were of paramount importance throughout
this project.
Electronic
Catalog:
Newton Instruments asked the student team to redesign the
Newton electronic catalog to make it as user friendly as
possible and completely available via the website. This
project involved specification and design through the use
of rapid prototyping.
Agent
Website for B2B service:
Details to be added soon.
Knowledge Management for Haht Commerce:
Many people using Haht software uncover various pieces of
knowledge. Some of this is shared through white papers and
newsgroups. Haht would like to take this a step further
and build an online community that will allow people to
learn from others. The members of the community will be
consumers and/or producers of technical information (e.g.
developers, consultants, system integrators, etc.). This
project had 2 phases: (1) Create an "as is" picture of the
organization that describes the current flow of information.
This will generate requirements necessary to find a solution.(2)
What should be purchased or developed to fulfill the requirements
generated in Phase 1.
